Laparoscopic (‘Key hole’)
Total laparoscopic hysterectomy: the uterus and cervix is removed without the need for a large abdominal incision. Most patients being discharged home within 48 hours with less pain and earlier resumption of normal activities than an abdominal (Open) hysterectomy.
Sub-total laparoscopic hysterectomy
The uterus is removed but the cervix is left in place. Most patients being discharged home within 24-48 hours and less pain and earlier resumption of normal activities than an abdominal (Open) hysterectomy.
Vaginal
A hysterectomy when all the procedure is undertaken through the vagina with no abdominal cuts/incisions. Only suitable for women with some degree of uterine prolapse.
Abdominal i.e open
Used when a laparoscopic approach is not suitable.
